BIBLICAL OVERVIEW - INTRODUCTORY COURSE
Joanna Cox from Church House writes:
Before Christmas some eagle-eyed Church Times readers among you noticed a letter about Biblical study resources from Alastair Macnaughton (Director of Discipleship Development - Newcastle and Durham dioceses). There they are beginning to use a resource which offers help in the area of need identified in a previous article by David Edwards ( 'unchain the Bible and see its diversity and glory’ / To pull together we must study together……the parish could be a place of learning once again’)
Alastair has sent more details about this resource - which makes some of the Foundations21 material available for group use. He writes:
"Bible Reading Fellowship have designed a short course ‘Making sense of the Bible for today’, which does, several of us feel in Durham and Newcastle dioceses, show the diversity and glory of the scriptures- for lay people.
In six one- and- a half hour sessions it gives an overview of the four gospels and a background to some of those parts of the Old Testament echoed or quoted in them. Participants have commented ‘we’ve been to Bible studies on particular books before now, but this gives us an overview like nothing else before.’ There is high-quality visual material at many points, for example, the seven signs in St John’s gospel. And there are poignant testimonies, like that of Petra Heldt, Christian priest in Jerusalem injured in a bombing incident in the city.
For further information email Paul Simmonds (Paul.Simmonds@brf.org.uk) asking for the free Information Sheet which provides more details. At this stage BRF are happy to supply this course free to churches via Diocesan Advisers.
Making Sense of the Bible is the first of what BRF anticipates will be a series of courses called 'Foundations21 essentials'. This first one will be free of charge. The Foundations21 project is dependant on donations and grants for it's development, BRF hopes that people who benefit from this course will want to contribute towards its ongoing costs. This is mentioned in the material."
