School choirs to sing in St Woolos Cathedral

In an imaginative response to the Education Secretary’s call for Cathedral Choirs to get more integrated with local primary schools, some Evensongs at St Woolos Cathedral this term will be sung by the choirs of local church schools.

The scheme is aimed at ensuring an increase in interest in music in the young. It involves two schools in a pilot scheme which is expected to increase to include other schools in the near future. The two schools involved are Magor VA School who will sing evensong on November 22nd, and St Mellons VC School who will sing evensong on December 6th.

Welcoming the development the Monmouth Diocesan Director of Education and Canon Residentiary at the cathedral, Canon Dr Keith Denison, said: “It is great to see a strengthening of the ties between the Mother Church and the family of Church Schools in this Diocese.”

Gareth Atwell, the Head Teacher at Magor, is enthusiastic about the project. He says:  “The school deems it a privilege to be invited to sing at the Cathedral. Evensong is a part of a very rich Anglican heritage which will extend and challenge the children’s musical abilities within the context of a spiritual experience.”
