Canon Richard Pain

The Ven Kenneth Sharpe, Archdeacon of Newport, is to retire in July.

The Bishop of Monmouth, Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, has invited the Ven Glyndwr Hackett, the present Archdeacon of Monmouth, to become Archdeacon of Newport. The Vicar of Monmouth, Canon Richard Pain, has accepted the bishop’s invitation to become Archdeacon of Monmouth.

Both Archdeacons will be installed during a special choral evensong in Newport Cathedral at 6.30pm on Sunday 6th July.

Archdeacon Glyndwr Hackett read theology at Durham and trained for ordination at Cuddesdon. He started his ordained ministry in Pembroke but has spent the past thirty three years in the Diocese of Monmouth as parish priest in Bassaleg, Blaenavon and Newport. He moved to Mamhilad when he became Archdeacon of Monmouth seven years ago.

Canon Richard Pain read English at Bristol and then obtained a first class degree in Theology at Cardiff. He trained at St Michael’s College, Llandaff. He has served all his ordained ministry in Monmouth Diocese: in Caldicot, Cwmtillery, Risca and Monmouth. He has also lectured at St Michael’s College and had senior responsibilities in the province and diocese. He became a Canon of the Cathedral in 2003.

Speaking about his new responsibility, Canon Pain said: "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to serve the Diocese in this role and I look forward to working with Bishop Dominic and my colleagues in helping support the parishes in their continuing development. My experience as a parish priest confirms my belief that the church at its best can be a useful resource of spiritual and pastoral care in local communities. The church’s presence in every community is a wonderful gift and I hope that we can continue to sustain that presence in creative and helpful ways."
